Recruiting and Publicity Information for Non-Profit
Organizations
What this site is about...
For years, I have worked with non-profit organizations assisting with
recruiting and inexpensive publicity. I'm not an expert by any
means. However, I feel that the experience that I have gained through
the years could benefit other people, which is why with the dawning of
2003 I am putting this information in the public domain.
This web page contains a Quick Guide that encapsulates many of the
strategies and ideas that have been found useful. Most of this is
applied everyday for my science fiction organization, other
information came to me from other sources.
The documents are all copyright 2003, and may be freely distributed
and used by non-profits provided that proper attribution is
given. Distribution and use is based on the unedited version
of the documents and paraphrasing. Please don't edit the document and
say that it's mine unless I have explicitly approved the changes.
Excerpts from past articles... these were written while serving
as a division coordinator of recruiting in STARFLEET, an international
network of Star Trek fan organizations and appeared in a regional
publication. These articles illustrate some of the
points in the Quick Guide.
June/July 2000: Be a walking
billboard this summer, ways to keep the group name in the open
August/September 1999:
Recruiting/Publicity without a formal setup at an event and How to
Recruit/Publicize in a saturated area
November/December 1998: Consider
this an example for setting up business relations. The article
details contacting a theater for a movie promotional, how to dress,
what to bring, etc. Building business relations over the long-haul is
discussed.
November/December 1997: One group
uses a survey to gather feedback from prospective recruits and uses a
mini-newsletter as an introduction. The article also discusses
"playing nice" with similar groups at an event so they work together
rather than against each other. Some of these ideas are geared more
towards fan organizations, although other types of groups might
benefit from the introduction newsletter and/or mini-survey.

Since there are references to Star Trek in some of the examples,
playing it safe....
